Douglas Mawson's Sled Plane

Douglas Mawson was an Australian polar explorer.

In 1912 Mr. Mawson took a plane to Antarctica but it had no wings. He wanted it to be like a sled with an engine. He would use it to drag supplies for explorers.

Antarctica is very cold, too cold for an engine to last long. The plane quit working. Mr. Mawson left it behind.

The sled plane got buried in ice. People thought it got washed into the ocean.

Australian researchers recently found the sled plane. It is still under ice. They can only see a little bit of it though.

The sled plane is still in the place he left it almost 100 years ago!

Storm Alley

Storm Alley on Saturn has been busy. There was a lightning storm south of the equator that was non-stop since January. It was the longest lasting thunder storm in the solar system.

The Cassini (kah-see-nee) spacecraft has been orbiting Saturn for about five years. Scientists in Germany have been using Cassini's Radio and Plasma Wave Science instrument to measure Saturn's lightning storms.

The last big storm lasted about 7 ½ months. Scientists have been watching a new storm since January 2009.

New England had cold rainy weather this summer. But it didn’t hurt the blueberry crop. The Tougas Family Farm in Northborough, Massachusetts rose blueberry crops. This year they tasted plentiful, plump and tasty. That makes them have tougher skin than others. That makes them less likely to get diseases.
